Work Visa
Vietnam's Visa System
Regular business and work visas
- DN1/DN2 (Business Visa): Issued to foreign nationals traveling to Vietnam for short-term business activities (such as meetings or sourcing), typically valid for 3 to 12 months.
- LĐ1/LĐ2 (Work Visa): Designated for employees permanently employed in Vietnam, with a maximum validity of 2 years.
- LĐ1: Issued to qualified experts with work permit exemptions.
- LĐ2: Issued to foreign nationals holding regular work permits.
- Derivative Privileges: Cardholders can apply for a Temporary Residence Permit (TRC) of the same duration, avoiding the hassle of frequent visa applications, and can apply for TT-type dependent visas for their spouses and children.
Tiered Investor Visa (ĐT) System
Vietnam has abandoned a one-size-fits-all approach and implemented a tiered investment visa system based on the actual amount of investment, directly linked to the length of residency:
- DIT1 Visa: Direct investment of VND 100 billion or more, or investment in extremely difficult areas/priority high-tech industries. A visa and TRC (Trade Certificate) valid for up to 10 years are granted. This is a core stepping stone to permanent residency (PRC) and includes unlimited visa-free entry and exit and the right to purchase certain commercial properties.
- DIT2 Visa: Investment between VND 50 billion and 100 billion, or investment in key national projects. A visa and TRC valid for up to 5 years are granted.
- DIT3 Visa: Investment between VND 3 billion and 50 billion. A visa and TRC valid for up to 3 years are granted. This covers the vast majority of wholly foreign-owned shareholders and joint venture representatives establishing small and medium-sized enterprises in Vietnam.
- DIT4 Visa: For micro-investors with investments below VND 3 billion. It is issued only as a single-year visa, and the law explicitly prohibits the holder from applying for a multi-year TRC. The holder must leave the country every year and renew the visa (Visa Run).
2026 Strategic Talent Introduction Privilege Visa
To align with specific national development strategies, the Vietnamese government has introduced groundbreaking privileged visa categories:
- UD1/UD2 (International Financial Centre Privilege Visa): Designed specifically for key investors, top scientists, and executives employed in the Ho Chi Minh City and Da Nang International Financial Centre (IFC). Cardholders (UD1) and their families (UD2) are directly granted residence permits valid for up to 10 years. They enjoy expedited processing (3 working days), exclusive VIP airport lanes, and accelerated processing of permanent residency (PRC) after meeting the 3-year residency requirement.
- SVEC (5-Year Special Visa Exemption Card): Promoted by the Ministry of Public Security, this card covers global leaders who have made significant contributions to Vietnam’s science and technology and economy, allowing them unlimited visa-free entry within 5 years, with a maximum stay of 90 days per entry.
