Work Visa

Thailand's Visa System

Standard work visa (non-immigrant B visa)

  • Basic Requirements: Foreigners must obtain a work permit before commencing work in Thailand. A prerequisite for applying for a work permit is that the applicant must enter Thailand on a non-immigrant B visa. If entering on a tourist visa, transit visa, or visa-free entry, the visa type must first be changed to a non-immigrant B visa.
  • Validity: Work permits for regular positions are typically valid for one year, while those for administrative positions or specialists may be issued work permits valid for two years.

SMART Visa

  • Target Audience: Specifically designed to attract foreign experts, executives, entrepreneurs, and investors wishing to work or invest in targeted industries in Thailand (such as automotive, electronics, healthcare, and digital industries).
  • Core Privileges: Visa validity up to 4 years (usually 1 year). No additional work permit required. Significantly extended reporting frequency to the Immigration Department, from once every 90 days to once a year. Legal family members (spouse and children) enjoy equal rights to live and work in Thailand.
  • Visa Subcategories: Includes skilled workers (T category), investors (I category), executives (E category), startups (S category), and spouses and legal children (O category).

LTR Visa

  • Target Audience: This initiative aims to enhance Thailand’s attractiveness to “high-potential” individuals by offering a range of tax and non-tax incentives. The target group includes affluent global citizens, wealthy retirees, professionals residing in Thailand (remote workers), highly skilled professionals, and their families.
  • Core Privileges: Visas renewable for up to 10 years (5 years for the initial stay in Thailand, with a further 5-year extension if eligible). Exemption from the standard employment ratio limit of 4 Thai citizens for 1 foreigner. Extended reporting period to the Immigration Bureau to 1 year, and exemption from re-entry permits (multiple-entry permits). Provision of a Thai digital work permit.
  • Significant Tax Benefits: Highly skilled professionals enjoy personal income tax rates as low as 17%, and overseas income is tax-free.
