Introduction

The Cognitive Abilities Test Fourth Edition (CAT4) is a suite of tests developed to support schools in understanding students’ abilities and likely academic potential. CAT4 comprises four batteries of tests that assess the main types of mental processing that play a substantial role in human thought.

Report Analysis

Sample Report

In the score section, the student’s mean CAT4 SAS (Standard Age Score) indicates how they compare to their peers, with the average set at 100. The student’s actual score is marked by a black dot. A horizontal line on either side of the dot represents the 90% confidence band, reflecting the possible range of scores due to chance variation. The yellow-highlighted area shows the average SAS range for each section.

Each student is assigned one of seven learning profiles based on their Verbal Reasoning and Spatial Ability scores. These two abilities are typically highly correlated, so differences between them may reveal important insights about the student’s learning preferences. These profiles provide insight into the student’s cognitive style and indicate how reliably their overall CAT4 score reflects their true ability, with the “No Bias” profile offering the highest reliability.
